About Sakina…
Sakina Hosseini lives in Ōtautahi Christchurch with her husband and four daughters aged between 18 and 4 years. She left her home in Herat, Afghanistan, 12 years ago with her husband and her two eldest daughters, after her husband was targeted by the Taliban for his work building schools for girls.
The family made the difficult journey to Malaysia together, where they applied for refugee status. They lived in Malaysia for 8 years, and arrived in Ōtautahi, New Zealand in 2021.
While living in Malaysia Sakina started a small bakery business making biscuits and baked goods to support her family.
Sakina’s love of baking and cooking began at home in Afghanistan. Her family was very well known in their home village and often had guests and people visiting. There was always lots of cooking being done and Sakina learnt her love of baking and cooking in the kitchen with her mother and older sisters.
Today her dream is to run a small wholesale bakery business, making and selling her biscuits and baked goods to cafes and businesses in Ōtautahi, in order to have a comfortable life here with her family.
